While Michael’s memory is still strong in the hearts of his family, friends and especially his three young children, it is our wish that he continue to touch the lives of others. Mike was a passionate man. He was passionate about his family, his friends and yes, about golf. Golf was a dominant part of Mike’s childhood. It shaped his thinking, his personality and his approach to life. When the foundation was first created, there was no question that a golf tournament would be the way to pay tribute to Mike and that fundraising proceeds would go to children’s charities. Since 2002 the “Finny-Hole-In-One tourney” has raised thousands of dollars while celebrating the memory of Michael Bradley Finnegan. Our annual tournament brings together over 250 friends, family, and many new friends who wish they had known Mike, to play golf, eat, laugh and dance together and remember Mike Finnegan. The event has allowed us to donate generously to both the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and the Make-A-Wish Foundation each of the past five years. We are proud that the foundation is administered solely by volunteers. There are no salaries paid and most goods and services are donated. All funds raised are invested and donated directly to children’s causes. Encouraged by our success, but wanting a “perfect match” for the foundation, we continually sought an entity to support that would combine both of Mike’s loves: golf and kids. In 2008 we discovered The Children’s Golf Foundation. The Foundation, created in 1988 to bring golf to mentally and physically challenged children, has a golf course, practice area and its own small full-service country club. Its dedicated instructors not only teach golf, but understand the unique abilities and disabilities of the students challenged with Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Autism and other disabilities. All instruction and equipment are provided free of charge, giving each child the opportunity to achieve “little victories” through the game of golf. After learning about Mike and our foundation, The Children’s Golf Foundation has decided to honor Mike in an extraordinary way: It will name the golf school “The Michael B. Finnegan Golf Learning Center, Home of The Children’s Golf Foundation”.
